The “Rose of Jericho” in the Moroccan desert.

Jericho's Rose, « Anastatica hierochuntica », is also rightly called, resurrection plant. "Anastatica" comes from the Greek and Anastasis means resurrection.

This plant, known for its ability to survive drying out, is one of the most enigmatic plants !

During hostile times, this plant gradually dries up.

For several years, without any drop of water, the Rose of Jericho is dormant until it is believed to be lifeless.

Deprived of sap, the leaves eventually darken and curl inward until they form a ball that can be uprooted. The Rose of Jericho may thus be in a comatose state for 10 years and up 50 years !

In this state, the plant only presents 3% of its mass. A lightness that allows it to be carried by the wind to a potential habitat, wetter.

So, this plant rolls and rolls endlessly on the hot sand of the desert until she finds a water point. She absorbs water until it circulates in her bowels like blood does in our body. It comes back to life and instantly recovers its greenery as if it had never suffered from any extreme dehydration.

The Rose of Jericho is a true miracle of nature. It is an immortal plant and a natural medicine with many virtues !

Au Maghreb, in spring, it's the whole plant (leaves and seeds) which is picked and then dried. It is prepared as an infusion or after maceration in water.

The seeds are rich in glucose, galactose, fructose, sucrose, raffinose et stachyose. They contain a group of compounds that make them a plant having a similar effect to some commonly prescribed drugs..

The plant contains 4 flavanols, 1 composed of flavone, glucose and derivatives as well as amino acids.

Its components are renowned in traditional medicine and in herbal medicine to treat various conditions such as malaria, cough, treat wounds, toothache, rheumatism and diabetes.

Jericho's Rose is thus renowned for its diuretic properties, carminatif, abortif, antioxidant, antiseptic and antimicrobial.
